Getting a new business off the ground

Starting a new business can be pretty overwhelming – there are just so many things to think about. Getting your financial and legal affairs in order will obviously be a top priority, but there are lots of other matters to address if your venture is to succeed.
Here’s a checklist of some of the key questions you should consider when planning a new business:

> What are you selling – and what is your USP?

This may seem like an obvious one, but the more specific you can be about your product or service before you start, the better – your message will be clearer and you’ll have a better chance of success. What makes it different? Is it filling a gap in the market?

> Who is your target market – and where can they be found?
Again, try and identify exactly who your business is aimed at. What are their interests and lifestyles? What are their buying habits? Where do they shop? Do they use social media, and if so, which platforms?

> Who are your competitors?
What other businesses sell similar products or services, and what can you do to set yourself apart from them? What can you learn from them?

> What kind of branding would be most effective?
How will you present your business in order to truly reflect your message, as well as appealing to your target market?

> How will you communicate?
Do you need a website, and if so, what does it need to do (eg will you sell online)? Will you use social media, and if so, which platforms? Do you need to develop other marketing materials, eg printed brochures, posters?

> What skills are you missing?
How much of the work of planning and launching your business will you be able to do yourself? Where do your strengths lie? Would it be beneficial to outsource tasks that require particular skills that you’re lacking?

> What other support might you need?
How will you manage the workload once your business is up and running? Will you need to employ staff on a permanent, temporary or casual basis? What sort of roles will you need to fill, and how is this best approached?

Of course, there’s plenty of good support out there for new business owners, to help you navigate some of these areas. Depending on your set up and funding, you might be able to access advice from the government, or your bank, or your local chamber of commerce, or perhaps a mentor.
